I did a post a while back on how to calculate motor starting time:
http://myelectrical.com/opinion/entryid/107/how-to-calculate-motor-starting-time
We also have a motor starting time calculator on the site (under tools):
http://myelectrical.com/tools/motor-starting-time-calculator

If you search the site Wiki you will also find some information on typical motor currents and motor testing. Recently I also started 'Steven's Catalogue List', under tools - which has some links to motor manufacturers and you can find more information there.
