Protection/Security of a Lab

Hi,

I am designing a high current AC lab. I have to design the protection/security system for the lab using a PLC. But i have no deep knowledge of PLC i.e. How to determine the no. of input and no. of outputs for the PLC. I will be using emergency stoppers, light curtains and some other security stuffs for protection and these instruments will be controlled by PLC. Can you provide guidance how i should solve it. Some link etc.

Thanks in Advance !!
