GE have put together a time-lapse video shown flight take-off and landings at some airports. An interesting view:

The more technical side is RNP (Required Navigation Performance), which uses on-board navigation that allows planes to follow a more precise track than methods that rely on ground-based beacons or radar. Where implemented this has the ability to reduce overall flight times, better use crowded air space and reduce fuel burn.

GE have already successfully implemented RNP at several airports.
